Project Use Case

Airline Rapid Recovery

The Airline Rapid Recovery tool allows users to quickly understate the current state of the airline, assess current and upcoming issues, and minimize schedule disruptions.

Project Overview

Using observational and interview research techniques with real users and subject matter experts, I identified desired goals and objectives, identified pain points and highlighted areas for improvement. I facilitated workshops that brought together team members to co-create ideas and opportunities, and worked with the PMs to prioritize and backlog items. The design concepts were developed into prototypes (sketch, pdf and clickable), tested with users, refined and developed.

Problem

The Airline Rapid Recovery tool was an example of incredible algorithms, calculating an entire airlines routes, asset and resource changes for problems as small as a 15-minute delay to as big as an east coast storm. However, 15 years of 'add on' features and no significant UI update had rendered the tool convoluted, highly complex, and usable only by highly trained subject matter experts.

Mission

To redesign the information architecture, workflow and interaction patterns of the tool from first principles, to optimize and improve the overall experience of the product.

Outcome

Positive interest and support from customers resulting in contract renewals and continued participatory design.

Process

Research

  • Workshop facilitation: Defining project goals, objectives and success criteria
  • Full feature analysis of current system.
  • Field research and interviews regarding airline operational practises.
  • Persona Development (Operations Controller, Crew Controller).

Recovery Personas
Ideation

  • Workflow definition and development.
  • Developed paper and wireframe prototypes to test and iterate initial concepts with users and stakeholders.

Design

  • Information and architecture design.
  • Interaction and Visual Design
  • Development of 'clickable' pdf and low code (html, css,JS) prototypes for user testing and iteration.

Implementation and Test

  • Worked closely with engineers to develop, test and iterate the designs.
  • Gathered qualitative feedback for users on usability, suitability and feature coverage.
  • Reviewed and analysed test feedback, and made implementation changes and recommendations.
